Going to Caye Caulker in Belize I had to go via Chetumal in Mexico, to Belize City and via water taxi to the Caye Caulker. From Playa Del Carmen, there is a direct first class bus to Chetumal in the south of Mexico on the border of Belize… I boarded the bus in Playa Del Carmen at 6.20 and arrived 11.15 in Chetumal. Only to realize, that there are 3 buses a day to Belize City: 10.45, 13.30 and 17.00. So I had to wait 2½ hours in a boring bus terminal. There wasen’t really anything outside, and I didn’t want to drag my backpacks around…
The last ferry to Caye Caulker is 17.30, so suddently I wasen’t sure, I would catch the last water taxi… Damn.
Anyways, after the wait, an old american schoolbus arrived from Belize. 20 mins. late. And we were off to Belize. Through immigration without problems and another couple of hours hasarded driving we arrived in Belize City – it was 17.40 – but the bus driver told us that we might catch the water taxi anyway and app. 14 people jumped into taxis – and at an outrageosly rate we were driven to the pier… Only to realize that the last taxi left 10 mins. ago…. We were stuck in Belize city overnight.
Now, how can I put this, Belize City is not the safest place on earth. So we were driven by the taxi driver to a nearby hostel and I bunked with a german couple, Bernt and Verena from Munich, and we agreed to stay together during the evening…
When we went outside to find a restaurant for dinner the owners of the hostel told us: Do NOT go left. Only go right. And stay together, minimum 6 people, and go directly to the restaurant, and directly back. Do not bring any valuables. Soooe… perphaps the rumors were right.

Long story short: we went out to eat and back. And experienced no problems, execpta very intoxicated rasta trying to sell us gancha? (a drug / marihuana) – were persistent and annoying… We followed us to our guesthouse, and the guards had to tell him in a firm way, that he couldn’t come in…
